Under the overall supervision of the Officer in Charge (O.I.C.) FAO Somalia and the direct supervision of the Programme Manager Nutirion/ CTA, to provide programme support in the formulation, monitoring and reporting of the field programme at country office level. In particular to:

Background
The Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) consist of two major components. i) The Food Security component which provides up to date quality food security information and ii) The Nutrition component which focuses on the generation of good quality timely and appropriate nutrition information. In addition the unit conducts applied research to explore and report on the underlying causes to malnutrition and food insecurity in Somalia. Both food security and nutrition information are analysed in the relevant context and provided to decision-makers within the humanitarian community in Somalia for use in the design of both short and longer term food security, nutrition and livelihood related interventions. FSNAU places strong emphasis on partnerships with local authorities and international and local humanitarian organisations for the specific development of capacity in Somalia and the region. This includes the provision of capacity building in Nutrition Assessment in Emergencies to Graduate Students in the region. As a component of this capacity building, FSNAU recognizes the importance of practical hands on experience in humanitarian agencies by Nutrition students. Therefore FSNAU is providing an opportunity for one student at Graduate or Diploma level in Nutrition for an internship at the FAO offices in Hargeisa, Garowe and Mogadishu.

This internship is scheduled for a period of two months, with the primary aim to use this period to impart technical knowledge on nutrition surveillance through on the job training. The intern will be under overall supervision of Nutrition Technical Manager, and direct supervision of zonal Nutrition focal point and work in close consultation with the Nutrition Focal Point. The intern will focus on the following tasks:

The successful candidate will be tasked with the following duties:
  1. Participate in the regular FSNAU nutrition and food security assessments.
  2. In close collaboration with Nutrition focal point for respective zones and with support from the Nutrition Analyst in charge of the zone and Nutrition Data Analyst assist in ensuring the Health Information System data and feeding facility data at the MoH Nutrition section is received, updated and run basic analysis of this information.
  3. Assist in cleaning and entry of nutrition assessments data, under the supervision of the relevant Nutrition focal point/ Analysts.
  4. Participate in the seasonal analysis and dissemination workshops and meetings.
  5. Attend Nutrition cluster meetings in the duty area and other relevant food security, nutrition and health related meetings.
  6. Under the supervision of the zonal Nutrition focal point, assist in the planning and preparation of nutrition surveys.
  7. In detail read the nutrition technical reports, updates and other relevant documents published from Gu season last year to date and ensure consistency in reporting of rates, confidence intervals, tables and information in text.
  8. In close collaboration with Nutrition focal point assist in drafting, editing and finalizing articles for the nutrition updates/technical series.
  9. Perform other tasks as assigned

Minimum qualifications:
  • Applicants MUST be Somali nationals, have completed at least diploma level education or graduate students pursuing studies in Nutrition or health.
  • Should be computer literate
  • Previous work experience not mandatory
  • Strong critical thinking and writing ability
  • Strong English writing and editing skills
  • High degree of self-motivation and initiative
  • Willingness to learn and apply new analytical approaches
  • Strong skills in basic computer packages – Knowledge in EPI Info, ENA or EPI6 an added advantage
  • Sensitivity to the social and cultural environment of Somalia
Deliverables/Expected Outputs
  1. By the end of the internship, the student should have gained considerable technical knowledge and understanding on nutrition surveillance and situational analysis. 
  2. All assignments given during the internship period should be completed as required.
  3. The intern is expected to submit a detailed report on their experiences and activities covered during the period.
Allowances and Remuneration
This position does not have a salary; however the intern will be paid a small stipend to cater for transport costs.
