PACT- Title Governance Research Intern

Position: Title Governance Research Intern
Requisition Number : 14-0178
Post Date 12/21/2014

Description Position Purpose
Pact is interested in looking at approaches and best practices for supporting civil society organizations (CSOs) within societies where there is “closing space” for civil society. Pact has years of experience supporting CSOs in constrained environments, such as Belarus, Cambodia, Ukraine and Zimbabwe. While the experience of Pact and others demonstrates that supporting civil society in such restricted environments requires distinctive approaches and methodologies, Pact has not systematically examined its own experience strengthening civil society in closed or constrained spaces. Similarly, it has not mined external research for lessons for its current and future projects.

The Research Intern will carry out an independent, academic study that aims to (1) identify common themes and lessons learned in Pact’s current and past civil society programming in constrained environments and (2) distill practical best practices from existing literature on the issue of “closing space.”

Volunteering Online - Part 1

The world is rapidly changing and the employment market is changing in equal measures. Our education systems do not adequately prepare grandaunts for work. Interestingly, the world has become, ''a global village'' thank to the Information Technology. The world has been taken by storm with the rapidly growing internet in the globe.

Most if not all organizations are increasingly using the Internet in many ways making work more easy and effective. Communication barriers due to distance and even language have been limited thus providing solution to the dynamics of the job environment.

For example most organizations now require all the applications to be sent electronically. More and more organizations in the world have moved away from paper applications. Adoption of screening softwares in the Human Resource have enabled the Organizations to have pre-screening sessions for the applicants thus limiting the number of ''irrelevant applications''. Therefore, new graduates should be aware and ready of this changes by;

Volunteering Pays

Volunteering Pays

The underlying message of this story is that many employers do not value skills attained through volunteerism as highly as those attained through paid work. But, more important, I am concerned that other readers may have misinterpreted the message to be that volunteerism is a wasted effort.

Volunteerism is not a wasted effort simply because it may not result in monetary return. Volunteerism is a commodity that cannot be measured in a monetary sense. Everyone involved in volunteerism, employed or unemployed, comes away with a sense of accomplishment. The person giving, the person receiving and the community as a whole all benefit.

Also, a job search is not simply defined by resumes and interviews; it is a process that often can evolve into a trying experience. Through volunteerism, an unemployed jobseeker can be provided with a sense of identity and purpose as well as motivation to continue during a time when spirits are low. The after-effects of these benefits can offer a job applicant something priceless--a positive attitude when entering an interview.

Volunteerism is never in short supply but always in high demand. Its benefits always come full circle, 10 times over. The bottom line is that it's a win-win situation for everyone. It does pay.

WHY VOLUNTEER OR DO AN INTERNSHIP- THE REALITY- PART 1

I have heard many graduates complain on how internship is hard work for them. They often complain that they fill 'used' or duped, because they are given many tasks to do. Remember current job market is searching for people first, who are well grounded and understand the very basics of their work. Secondly, the job market is seeking for people who are able to multi-task and creative and thirdly, the job market is searching for professions who have experience and can deliver with minimal supervision. And this is just the reality in the current job market. Therefore, for them to consider hiring a volunteer or intern they have identified a gap that needs to be filled within their organizations.

Consequently, graduates need to understand that internship;
  • It provides an opportunity for the graduate to be able to work in different departments/sections for exposure. remember the job market right now a person who is more independent. e.g a graduate will be involved in office filling not because the organisation wont do it but rather it provides you as the trainee an opportunity to learn different useful skills.

HOW TO PREPARE AS AN INTER/VOLUNTEER

Many of the graduates searching for Internship/Voluntering or even graduate trainee opportunities often have no idea on where to start. These are not lessons that our colleges or universities prepare us for, but in real life we need to know on how to prepare. Below are pointers that we must know;

  1. Internship/Voluntering must be taken serious:- Most of the graduates do not consider this search as a serious business hence we never prepare our Curriculum Vitae properly and Cover letter. The job market especially in Kenya is very competitive, anything short of a good CV and Cover letter will not pass the day. Remember this is the entry point to the job market thus preparation is paramount.
