United Nations University- Tokyo Communications Intern

The Campus Computing Centre (C3) seeks interns who are interested in getting acquainted with and taking an active part in the day-to-day operation of an ICT department. Interns will spend 3 to 6 months working in the UNU Campus Computing Centre to learn about our operations while assisting in our work.

Our intern is majoring or has majored in a computing-related degree or is currently pursuing or has recently completed postgraduate studies (master’s or doctoral), preferably in a computing-related field, and:

• Is able to demonstrate a passion for a particular area of computing, be it software development, networking, user interface design, etc.
• Is proficient in written and spoken English
• Demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving
• Japanese ability an advantage
• Web Design experience an advantage
• Working Environment and Conditions

An Internship with C3 is a chance to be part of a dynamic, multi-cultural team. C3 operates a flat department structure so all staff are accessible and easy to talk to. Unfortunately, the University cannot offer any financial assistance for the internship and interns themselves are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to UNU in Tokyo. However, we do have paid positions open from time to time and interns are highly encouraged to apply.

Work Assignments

Interns in C3 have the opportunity to engage in a number of ongoing projects, including but not limited to the following technologies:

• Greening ICT strategy and techniques
• Exploring viable ways of integrating more open source software into our computing environment and operations
• Virtualization
• SAN
• Information security and networking
• Data mining
• Content management systems
• Livecasting video, video editing & publishing to the Web
• Create Visio diagrams of the global campus infrastructure
• Virtual Lab available for training, learning & evaluation of technology products/services
• Improve programming skills in PHP, CFML, Javascript, AJAX, CSS & Fusebox
• Application of social networking to support knowledge sharing and intellectual debates on possible solutions to global issues, such as climate change and human sustainable development
• Use of modeling, adaptation and personalization technologies to design intelligent websites and information portals
