Freedom House promotes the spread of freedom and democracy around the world through research, effective advocacy, and programs that support frontline activists. We are a leader in identifying threats to freedom through our highly regarded analytic reports, including Freedom in the World, Freedom of the Press, Freedom on the Net, Nations in Transit, and Countries at the Crossroads. With 13 field offices and two U.S. offices, we support the right of every individual to be free.
The Intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in program administration, USAID financial rules and regulations, developing grant proposals, and Freedom House methodology. He/she will work collaboratively with the Africa team and be given meaningful opportunities to add value to Africa program initiatives and projects. He/she will demonstrate an academic background in African issues, knowledge of human rights, strong interest in democratic principles, and career aspirations related to the region.
This internship position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Program Manager of Africa programs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Intern must be enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite
- Ability to work independently and to collaborate with others and work as an effective team member
- Interest in human rights, democracy and/or international development concepts
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles preferred
- Experience living, volunteering, working, or studying in Sub-Saharan Africa preferred
- Ability to communicate effectively in French is preferred
- Assist with background research needed for proposals and program activities
- Assist with administrative and logistical support for day-to-day functioning of Africa team
- Assist with database maintenance
- Attend Africa related events and other external meetings as necessary and provide readout to team members
- Assist with other related projects as needed.
