WHY VOLUNTEER OR DO AN INTERNSHIP- THE REALITY- PART 1

I have heard many graduates complain on how internship is hard work for them. They often complain that they fill 'used' or duped, because they are given many tasks to do. Remember current job market is searching for people first, who are well grounded and understand the very basics of their work. Secondly, the job market is seeking for people who are able to multi-task and creative and thirdly, the job market is searching for professions who have experience and can deliver with minimal supervision. And this is just the reality in the current job market. Therefore, for them to consider hiring a volunteer or intern they have identified a gap that needs to be filled within their organizations.

Consequently, graduates need to understand that internship;
  • It provides an opportunity for the graduate to be able to work in different departments/sections for exposure. remember the job market right now a person who is more independent. e.g a graduate will be involved in office filling not because the organisation wont do it but rather it provides you as the trainee an opportunity to learn different useful skills.
  • In most cases, it is through the internship training that one is able to affirm their career path if not gives an opportunity for the graduate to identify their niche in the job market.
  • Internship provides a platform for learning on the real job while shaping the graduates to the job market.
