EU Advocacy and Research Intern

Role:

This six month internship will support the EU advocacy team and the Director of the Europe and Central Asia Program by conducting research into EU policy and conflict situations of relevance to Crisis Group, producing research memos and background materials, and assisting with advocacy tasks, including scheduling and attending meetings.

The position is for a highly motivated, well organized and efficient candidate who is looking to gain hands-on EU policy and advocacy experience and country and issue-specific knowledge of conflict prevention and resolution.

Responsibilities:
  • Research and draft background materials on EU foreign policy and activities related to conflict issues covered by Crisis Group;
  • Support the EU advocacy team in monitoring closely and preparing regular news summaries and updates on EU policies and institutions, as well as EU member state developments;
  • Review and prepare summaries and analysis of EU policy documents;
  • Assist with the organisation of advocacy meetings at the EU and NATO institutions and with member state governments;
  • Attend advocacy meetings, conferences and events and prepare event reports and meeting notes; and
  • Provide general administrative support.

Requirements:
  • An undergraduate degree or in pursuit of a degree, preferably in European studies, international relations, conflict studies, government, or similar;
  • In-depth knowledge of EU foreign policy and EU decision-making procedures and institutions, including strong understanding of the CSDP-related institutional framework. Prior experience with the EU institutions or NATO would be an asset;
  • Strong research skills with the ability to pay close attention to detail;
  • Analytical skills and ability to digest complex information into concise and informative briefs;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • High degree of professionalism and ability to comfortably liaise with high ranking officials via telephone, e-mail or in person;
  • Organizational skills, efficiency and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with limited supervision;
  • English language skills at native-speaker level a must. Advanced or at least conversant knowledge of French highly desirable. Knowledge of other European languages would be an asset;
  • Possession of an EU passport, student visa, or other means of residing in Belgium for six months.
