Position title: Project Development and Monitoring Intern
Position grade: Intern
Duty station: Nairobi, Kenya (IOM Somalia)
Duration: 6 months (with possibility of extension of additional 3 months)

Overall supervision by : Chief of Mission
II. Organizational Context and ScopeIncreasing access and significant donor interest in Somalia has led to increasing programmatic scope for IOM to engage in supporting the Federal Government of Somalia and regional and local administrations in delivering peace dividends to the Somali population. With approximately 3.1 million people requiring humanitarian assistance and a lack of access to basic services for significant parts of the population, delivering humanitarian aid, while also increasing the local, regional and federal governments’ capacity in service delivery and community based recovery is essential to continue supporting Somalia in its transitional phase. In this context, IOM Somalia is developing and drafting a multitude of concept notes and proposals and has embarked on instituting a more robust monitoring and evaluation framework and is therefore seeking for an intern to assist with project development, reporting and monitoring and evaluation.
III. Responsibilities and AccountabilitiesUnder the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, IOM Somalia, under the direct supervision and guidance of the Project Development Officer, and in close coordination and consultation with colleagues from the Project Development and Monitoring Unit and colleagues from other units in Nairobi and the field, the incumbent will be assigned to tasks and responsibilities below:

a) Delivers on set objectives in hardship situations; b) effectively coordinates actions with other implementing partners; c) works effectively with local authorities, stakeholders, beneficiaries, and the broader community to advance country or regional objectives.
****V. Personal Development****
The incumbent will gain understanding of IOM and the UN system and develop skills in project development as well as monitoring and evaluation. He/she will also gain basic technical knowledge in IOM’s areas of intervention, including migration health, WASH, livelihoods, community based recovery and capacity building as well as gain insight into working in an international multi-cultural environment

- Assist in drafting concept notes and proposals for potential donors and funding opportunities such as European Commission (EC), Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS), the African Development Bank, Common Humanitarian Fund, Central Emergency Respond Fund, bilateral donors, etc. in IOM’s areas of interest.
- Assist with reporting by reviewing and editing initial drafts from project units, drafting input to reports and coordinating inputs for submission.
- Assist with providing and coordinating inputs for information requests from Headquarters, the Regional Office, other IOM missions and external partners, such as donors, partner agencies, implementing partners, etc.
- Assist in the development of monitoring and evaluation tools and support in data management
- Support the development of Performance Monitoring Frameworks for projects and programmes and assist project managers in the use of the same.
- Support the development of training modules in project development as well as monitoring and evaluation.
- Assist in identifying potential and realistic funding opportunities by collecting donor information, liaising with potential donors, and attending coordination meetings.
- Assist in coordination with the Communications Unit to produce visibility materials for publicity to appeal to donors for resource mobilization (provision of content, editing).
- Assist in general administrative tasks.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Project Development Officer

VI. Education and Experience
- Master’s degree (in progress) in International Relations, International Development, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Some work experience, preferably in the international development/humanitarian sector.
- Work experience in technical writing, editing, and reporting. Work experience in donor relations would be an asset.
- Some experience in and understanding of monitoring and evaluation concepts.
- Strong technical writing skills in English.
- Fluency in English. Knowledge of Somali is an advantage.
