The Green Belt Movement (GBM)
has worked in environmental conservation and community development in
Kenya since 1977. The mission of GBM is to strive for better environmental
management, community empowerment, and livelihood improvement using tree
planting as an entry point. GBM works with communities to mobilize
environmental awareness and understanding about the links between poverty
and unsustainable use of natural resources. The Green Belt Movement’s
network has planted over 47 million trees and empowered hundreds of
thousands of women to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves and
their families. GBM has a strong advocacy record with campaigns
recognized internationally on land grabbing, protection of public spaces
and human rights. GBM is headquartered in Kenya and has offices in Europe
