Save the Children- Finance Intern


Position Title:   Finance Intern
Place of Work:  East Africa Regional Office, Nairobi
Reports to:  Regional Finance Manager
Contract Length:  to December 31 2012
Introduction

Job Purpose
The Regional Finance Team is a part of Save the Children’s East Africa Regional Office and provides financial management oversight and support to senior managers and finance teams in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania. The Finance Intern will provide financial accounting and
administrative support to the Regional Finance Manager and Regional Finance and Administration Officer.
Key Responsibilities
1) Assist the Regional Finance and Administration Officer in ensuring the Regional Office finances are recorded in an accurate and timely manner 
Main Activities
1. Assist with preparation of vouchers for claims and expenses 
2. Assist the analyses of general ledger items
3. Assist preparation of bank statement reconciliations
4. Assist the preparation of expenditure variance reports
5. Maintain physical financial files and records
6. When necessary assist the RFAO in maintaining the SUN database
2) Assist in the maintenance of accounts payable and accounts receivable systems in order to ensure complete and accurate records 
Main Activities
1. Assist with the reconciliation of accounts receivable and payables
2. Assist in follow up of float advances made to staff
3. Compile source documents supporting expenditure
4. Issue and code purchase orders
5. Issue cheques for all accounts due
6. Issue receipts for payments made
3) Administer use of office resources, service contracts with key suppliers and other procurement
Main Activities
1. Assist with asset and inventory management
2. Maintain a schedule of utility payments and ensure they are paid on time
3. Assist with petty cash administration when necessary
4. Assist in the maintenance of a simplified procurement tracker
5. Process supplier invoices and maintain an analysis of past payments   
6. Conduct assessment of the various service providers to ensure cost benefit advantage is maintained
4) Perform any other related tasks as may be assigned. 
 Person Specification 
• Accountant in training who wishes to gain some practical experience
• Degree in finance, accountancy or similar field 
• Excellent computer skills especially in MS Excel spread sheets and MS Word
• Some experience with computerised accounting packages will be desirable.
• High level of integrity and ability to work as part of a professional team
• Excellent communication skills
