UN High Commissioners for Refugees- Internship


Research/Knowledge Management Intern Operational Solutions and Transition Section, Division of Programme Support and Management UNHCR Geneva

Purpose To record lessons learned and good practices from on-going/past solutions initiatives which will inform strategic discussion, planning and implementation of future initiatives.

Background After a decade of initiatives to address protracted displacement situations, there is increasing need to analyze relevant and accessible knowledge about past approaches. The organization seeks to review what success has been achieved in recent solutions initiatives and where it may be necessary to rethink its engagement. As part of the ongoing implementation of evidence-based principles in its operations, an effort is underway to update its current institutional repository of solutions lessons-learned and best practices, focusing on local integration and reintegration.

Responsibilities •Undertake desk review (UNHCR and outside sources) of local integration and reintegration initiatives •Identify best practices and lessons learned in different solutions contexts (local integration, reintegration of refugees and IDPs)

Output •A synthesis of lessons learned/good practices about what does (not) work and evidence of the results achieved. The report will be internal and meant to inform UNHCR’s on-going/future engagement in solutions initiatives by providing insights into points of leverage for success. •A matrix that provides a quick overview of past initiatives with simple parameters for comparison.

Requirements •Graduate student or recent graduate (refugee/humanitarian/development studies, social sciences) •Very good research and analytical skills •Good knowledge of refugee issues and durable solutions highly desirable •Fluency in English and excellent writing skills •Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish an asset

Commitment Full time for 3 months: starting ASAP (possibility of extension depending on agreed scope of review). The intern will be placed at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

She/he will be able to substantially contribute to the organisation’s work on durable solutions and inform UNHCR’s future engagement in solutions situations.

This is an unpaid position. Unfortunately, UNHCR is unable to provide accommodation, travel, or health insurance.
