World Aids Campaign International- Communicaitons Voluteer Position

TERMS OF REFERENCE
Title: Communications Volunteer Position
 

a)Introduction& Background:
World AIDS Campaign International (WACI) is a regional advocacy organization registered in South Africa. The mission of WACI is to work through campaigning, advocacy and lobbying towards improved HIV and Health outcomes in Africa. WACI hosts the Africa Civil Society Platform on Health whose mission is to unite African Civil Society voices and mobilize action
towards improved HIV and health outcomes in Africa. 


The platform is guided by three key objectives:
  • Significantly increase and sustain advocacy efforts to hold governments accountable to their commitments to invest in health
  • Enhance delivery systems through a sustained human‐rights based approach and promote enforcement and protection against violations of people’s health and HIV related human rights
  • Increase civil society engagement in ensuring people’s universal access to health and that health remains a priority area of investment in the post 2015 era.
  • We are seeking the support of a communications specialist who is interested and available to volunteer with our dynamic organization.
b)Scope of the work In your role you will be expected to:
  • Develop a versatile communications strategy to support our newly created organization

  • Lead WACI’s thinking on establishing a vibrant communications presence in areas of health
  • financing, human rights and universal access to health.
  • Use professional knowledge of communications to write reports, news releases,
  • summaries, briefing papers and talking points on issues of pressing importance
  • Formulate and coordinate messaging in time sensitive and highstakes situations
  • Develop a social media toolkit for our campaigns
  • Communicate swiftlyabout our work and the work of our key partners
  • Coordinate responses to media on the work of WACI and its partners
  • Update WACI’s website on regular basis
c) Timeframe
  • This is a six month engagement with a likelihood of renewal
d)Requirements
Qualification:

  • University Degree ina relevant field, such as Communications, Social Sciences or
 Experience:
  • At least 3 years of experience in journalism or related communications fields.
  • In-depth understanding of how news media operatesProven ability to work in a multi cultural environment

Competences:

  • Languages: An excellent knowledge of English and preferably a good working knowledge of French.
  • Knowledge of other languages would be an asset.
 Technical Competencies:
  • Excellent writing, editing and oral communications skills
  • Ability to write on deadline and change direction on short notice
  • Solution oriented and proactive mindset
e)Remuneration:
  • While the position does not offer any remuneration or benefits, it presents the candidate with tremendous opportunities to drive change in global health affairs through communications.
