Physical Planning and Shelter Internship: IT Intern (Database & Drupal website management)

Terms Of Reference

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is currently seeking an intern to work with the Nairobi Regional Support Hub (RSH). The Intern will gain practical experience in developing and maintaining a DRUPAL website, the Shelter and Physical Planning operations of UNHCR and exposure to emergency response for refugees.

About UNHCR Regional Support Hub:The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and coordinate international action for the protection of refugees, its primary purpose is to safeguard their rights and wellbeing. The RSH provides operational support and advice to 12 core countries in East Africa, the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.

Objectives:In line with the support function of RSH, a number of web portals have been developed to provide information materials, improved coordination and resources both for internal office staffing procedures and also for operational support. Currently two portals are in development, namely
1: RSH Intranet for office procedures, regional updates, mission reports and other operational data.
2. Regional Toolkit for the compilation and documentation of infrastructure projects in the region and providing guidance.
Tasks & Responsibilities:As an intern, you will be based in Nairobi, in the UNHCR-Regional Support Hub (RSH), working directly with the Refugee Systems Unit and the Physical Planning and Shelter Unit, undertaking the following:
• Assist in the development of the Intranet,
• Assist in the development of the regional shelter database of case studies to compile, collate documents on shelter projects in the region
• Assist in the development of the online portal for the dissemination of the information using DRUPAL 7
• Assist with publications and information materials
• Assist with day-to-day administrative tasks and support the supervisors

Qualifications, skills and experience:• University degree in information technology, data management systems or related subject. Experience and proven ability also considered.
• Excellent knowledge of information management, web project management skills, web site design (DRUPAL 7)
• Experience using LINUX server;
• Experience in developing mobile applications an advantage
• Strong interest in and exposure to emergency response and humanitarian issues;
• Solid research, writing and analytical skills, editing and formatting skills;
• Computer literacy and graphics proficiency (Word, Excel, Access, Adobe Suite, or open source equivalent);
• Experience in database development and management;
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment;
• Excellent writing and editing skills in English;
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time and multiple tasks efficiently and have a positive attitude
• Applicants must have be Kenyan citizens or have a valid work permit for Kenya

Internship Information:1. Three-month period, start date July 7th 2013, with the possibility of extension
2. UN Internships are unpaid. The intern is responsible for their own travel, accommodation, medical insurance, visas, and living expenses.
3. Interns are not allowed to apply for a job within the UN Secretariat for a period of six months following the internship.
4. For the purpose of the internship, the supervision and tasks will be split equally on the two projects, under the supervision of Justin Senn, and Elizabeth Palmer.
5. The intern will work directly with the Drupal Team.
